What they didn’t broadcast on Shark Tank.
UPDATE: 10/24/2015
It was awesome getting all that exposure, but there are a couple key facts they did not broadcast on Shark Tank. Don’t believe everything you see on TV, as it’s all altered for mass viewing. We felt it was important to post these facts because we feel our brand may have been misrepresented or misunderstood by the way they edited it.
- FACT 1: The Skinny Mirror was first designed for the individual for personal use. Retailers began purchasing the mirrors for their stores and this is why we decided to put the logo on the front of the mirror. It was our way of avoiding any misuse to deceive customers.
- FACT 2: Over half the total sales have been to individuals and homes, not just to retailers.
- FACT 3: It’s not a Lie - (Kevin’s argument - who by the way was too afraid to look at himself in the mirror) - We lie to ourselves every day without thinking about it. Read this article - The Truth and Why The Skinny Mirror Works.
Thank you for your continued support. Remember, You Are Beautiful!
Watch The Skinny Mirror on Shark Tank, Friday October 23, 9-10PM EST/PST.
SHARK TANK - “Episode 705” - In one of the most exciting moments of “Shark Tank” history, the ante is upped when the Sharks start to bid OVER the asking price for one product and the million dollar offers start to fly. But will greed burst the bubble before a deal is set? Another pitch prompts a brutal brush-off from an irate Shark. Two parents from Salem, Massachusetts pitch their novel idea for managing Trick-or-Treaters’ excess candy with a children’s book and gifts; two men from Pacific Palisades, California tout their premium beef jerky made from filet mignon which has the Sharks swooning over the taste and the price point; a woman from Sand City, California pitches a full-length mirror designed to build self-esteem, and two men from Sandpoint, Idaho claim they have redefined drones with inventions that fly up to 60 mph and as high as 10,000 feet. In addition, in a follow-up on the NYC-based Bantam Bagels, the company in which Lori Grenier invested last season, we see how their unique stuffed bagels fare when given a national stage, on “Shark Tank,” FRIDAY, OCTOBER 23 (9:00-10:01 p.m. ET) on the ABC Television Network. LORI GREINER, BELINDA JASMINE (THE SKINNY MIRROR)
In the mid-70’s I worked for Gates Lear Jet in Tucson. There was a mirror in the restroom of some administrative offices which was a ‘skinny’ mirror. I was working in a position where I had to answer questions from over 40 women. At a certain ‘time of month’ almost all of the women were on their cycle. The moods reduced productivity. I asked upper management if the ‘skinny’ mirror could be relocated to the restroom that the 40 + women used. I felt that productivity would be significantly increased during this ‘time of month’ at a minimum. The staff where the ‘skinny’ mirror was located was adamant against allowing the relocation.
Whenever I was feeling ‘low’ I would go to that ‘skinny’ mirror. It ALWAYS boosted my ego.
I would be willing to invest in your product.
Those Sharks just didn’t understand. I do.
Just saw a rerun of your mirror and I love it!! Do not understand why the Sharks did not like it!! I do not make a lot of money and want to buy one, I do not know where I can buy one that is a reasonable price. I also hate all the stores mirrors, thy make me look fatter!!
When I began watching the show, I was thrilled to see your skinny mirror. I have complained often about how most mirrors misrepresent one’s real body shape with poorly crafted mirrors. t use the skinny mirror in my son’s room to view garments rather than my own. In some stores, I just give up trying on clothes when the mirrors are so aweful. Although there is a mirror at one Brooks Bros that is so skinny, that I look anorexic, which is pushing it too far the other way. But ,when my friends complain about how they look and I think they’re fine, I suggest they change out their mirror to a skinny mirror.
I actually think there is a consipiracy between mirror manufacturers and diet companies to foist a falsehood upon the unsuspecting public. More probable is that manufacturers lack the math or are unaware that math is needed to accurately determine the size of an image viewed in a mirror. Mr. Wonderful erroneously assumes that mirror manufacturers are correctly producing the mirror to scale. He fails to follow his own advice, which is to assume nothing.
Perhaps you could bolster your case by showing the difference: use a known dimentsion 1×1 foot square, say 5 feet from the mirror and with a lazer pointer or other measuring device, show how the image in most mirrors display the same square x inches or percent larger. Use a random sampling of mirrors from various stores.
Anyway, appreciate the effort. Meanwhile, I will continue to sort mirrors they way I sort two by fours at the lumberyard to make sure they’re straight and true. 🙂
I have been saying for years, we should all have a skinny mirror. That said, there you were on Shark Tank, answering my prayers. Why they didn’t understand, they are thin and all consuming in their world.
I understand the retail aspect you were going for, thus there comments. Step back and realize that the skinny mirror should really be repackaged as a “tool” for personal use, in the home. I say “tool” because when trying to get weight off looking in the mirror will encourage, give self-esteem, visually help to build confidence in one self. The psychology of every human, look good, feel good!
I would buy the skinny mirror at Target, Bed, bath and beyond, or whatever retailer. Your price point is high, which could be lower, using less expensive framing; that is what is holding me back. I see it on the closet door, checking myself before going out into the world!
You have a fabulous product, focus on the individual consumer, not just retail. You may sell more than you think!
It’s just an idea, different marketing strategy.
Best of luck,
Cindy
Hi Cindy, thank you for your comments! The mirror was initially designed for women at home. Retailers just started buying them. More than half of our customers are people buying them for their homes. We are working with a manufacturer to make The Skinny Mirror consumer model more affordable. We really do want this mirror to be used as a tool to help women see themselves more beautifully. We are still hand making all of them in-house in small quantities and this is why the cost is so high. Hoping to find a manufacturer than can get these mirrors into more people’s hands! Like us on Facebook, we will be posting any news and new developments with our product! Thanks again Cindy!
[…] product is called the Skinny Mirror, designed by Belinda Jasmin. It’s worth reading the story behind the mirror. In short, […]
Dear Ms. Jasmine,
I just watched your segment on Shark Tank. Frankly, I don’t understand the cumulative, negative and clueless reaction you elicited with your product. Especially with the lone female, Lori. Ah well, it is certainly not lost on me.
I am a 62 year old female residing in South Georgia (I feel you thanking God neither of those statements applies to you). When I do go out to social functions, put in contacts, put on makeup, fix the hair, choose the clothes I rarely wear, etc., I want to feel beautiful. But MY mirror tells me I am older and 15 pounds heavier, and that the “heavier” has been redistributed in an unappealing manner. So obviously, if YOUR mirror reminds me of a kinder, happier day and I project that confidence to others, of course their response is more likely to correspond to my own. What is difficult about that reasoning?
I could sell your mirrors like hotcakes around here, and I’m retired. I grew up here and I don’t THINK I could sell them, I KNOW I could sell them.
Interested?
Confidently,
E.A. Odom
PS Yes, I am purchasing my own in case you were wondering.
I’m sorry the Sharks didn’t get it. When I look in the mirror I KNOW I’m not that big and it’s so discouraging. Like you said, the mirror is 2 dimensional and we are not. So a mirror that makes me look a bit thinner is probably a more accurate representation.
This isn’t a freakish circus mirror, it just helps correct flaw in ordinary flat/fat mirror. Personally I think this is brilliant. Unfortunately it’s too pricey for the average person to spend on a mirror….that’s the only drawback.
Good luck and don’t let the Sharks get you down.
I can’t wait to see this! I’m so excited to see how this goes for you Belinda. This is a great accomplishment for letting the world know about your great product. I’m telling everyone to watch.
